In late March 2025, Sage Creek High School in Carlsbad, California, hosted a lunchtime "Ally Week" event organized by its Gender Sexuality Alliance (formerly Gay–Straight Alliance).
As part of the program, the school invited Mita Beach—a self‑described “BDSM” expert—and representatives from a medical clinic and LGBTQ support organizations involved in gender transition surgeries and housing services, to speak to students.
BDSM is an umbrella term that encompasses a range of consensual sexual and erotic practices involving elements of: Bondage and Discipline (B/D), Dominance and Submission (D/s), and Sadism and Masochism (S/M).
Beach, who identifies with “they/them” pronouns, had previously facilitated workshops such as "Kink 101" and sessions on self-injury and erotic body modification. Images on social media reportedly depicted BDSM imagery and sexualized content, drawing significant parental concern.
Parents expressed outrage upon learning of Beach's planned involvement, citing a lack of prior notification from the school. Within 24 hours, the school canceled Beach's participation, though retained at least two other speakers connected with gender medicine clinics and youth transition support groups.
Critics drew parallels to earlier controversies, including a drag‑show event at Roseville High School organized by a group claiming to be a church, raising concerns about adult-themed content in school‑sponsored or school‑allowed programming. Parents argued these incidents reflect a troubling trend of exposing minors to sexual content under the guise of inclusivity.
These events unfolded amid heightened national discourse over "gender ideology" in schools, parental rights, and federal scrutiny of California education policy. Some see Sage Creek’s invite as a potential test case for executive orders and legal efforts aimed at limiting what critics term ideological indoctrination in public schools .
