The Kern High School District — California’s largest by both enrollment and land area — took a courageous and principled stand for fairness in women’s sports. In a 3–2 vote, the district adopted a new Title IX resolution that restricts girls’ athletic participation to biological females. With this decision, Kern joins a growing number of California school districts defending the integrity of girls’ sports and reaffirming the original intent of Title IX.
A Growing Movement for Fair Competition
Kern’s decision makes it the 16th district or board in California to adopt a similar policy. The resolution, authored by Chino Valley Unified School District Board of Education President Sonja Shaw, has become a rallying point for communities across the state who believe that fairness, safety, and biological reality must remain central to school athletics.
As Shaw explained, “I authored this resolution to be the voice of our communities — to stand with our girls and protect the truth that should’ve never been silenced. Boys are boys. Girls are girls. God made them beautiful just the way they are. It’s time to put fairness, truth, and common sense back into education.”
Her words resonate deeply with parents and educators who see this as a necessary correction to policies that have, for years, blurred the lines of fairness in competitive sports.
Title IX and the Question of Fairness
Title IX was established to ensure equal opportunities for women in education and athletics. Allowing biological males to compete in girls’ divisions directly undermines that purpose. The Kern resolution reaffirms that protecting opportunities for girls does not mean excluding anyone — it means preserving a level playing field where female athletes can compete safely and fairly.
The U.S. Department of Justice’s ongoing lawsuit against California’s education agencies underscores the seriousness of this issue. The DOJ argues that state policies permitting biological males in girls’ sports violate federal Title IX protections — a position that aligns with what Kern and other districts are now affirming at the local level.
Broad Public Support Across California
This isn’t a fringe position. A bipartisan survey by the Public Policy Institute of California found that 65% of adults and 71% of public-school parents believe transgender athletes should compete on teams matching their biological sex. Those numbers reveal a strong consensus: most Californians support policies like Kern’s that protect fairness in girls’ athletics.
Looking Ahead
Kern High School District’s action reflects a broader shift toward restoring common sense and fairness in school sports — values that transcend politics and ideology. As more districts follow Kern’s example, California is seeing a powerful grassroots movement grounded in respect for women’s sports and for the intent of Title IX itself.
We stand firmly behind Kern High School District’s decision and commend its board members for their leadership. Protecting opportunities for girls is not discrimination — it’s justice, and it’s long overdue.
